The Maharashtra government has taken a big decision on work hours in the private sector.
From now on, employees may have to work up to 10 hours a day, with provisions allowing even 12-hour shifts with proper breaks. The new rules also raise the overtime cap from 115 to 144 hours per quarter, ensuring double pay for extra duty.
According to the state cabinet, led by CM Devendra Fadnavis, these labour law changes are meant to boost investment, create jobs, and bring flexibility to industries. Shops with fewer than 20 employees will also get easier compliance rules. While the government says workers’ rights will be protected, many are asking — will this lead to better opportunities or less work-life balance?
