In 1944, the U.S. Army created the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops—a top-secret unit of
1,100 soldiers whose weapons weren't guns, but inflatable tanks, sound effects, and fake radio
chatter. These soldiers were artists, designers, and sound engineers recruited to trick the
Nazis. They carried inflatable Sherman tanks that weighed just 100 pounds, set up fake
headquarters with scripted radio transmissions, and blasted recordings of tank battalions
moving through speakers.
The Ghost Army staged over 20 battlefield deceptions across Europe, often operating just
miles from German lines. They would inflate an entire armored division overnight, making
the Germans think 30,000 soldiers were in one location while the real army attacked
elsewhere. Their most famous operation helped cover the Rhine River crossing—one of the
largest Allied operations of the war. German intelligence fell for it completely, redirecting
forces away from the actual attack.
The Ghost Army saved an estimated 15,000-30,000 Allied lives through pure deception. The
unit remained classified until 1996—fifty years after the war ended. These artists quite
literally painted their way to victory.
