Money Making Lighting Setups: Photographing Men | Inside Fashion and Beauty Photography w/ Lindsay

If you are only photographing female subjects then you are missing out on a big part of the photographic market! While I specialize in beauty photography and most often photograph women, much of my commercial work involves male subjects. I’ve photographed professional athletes, executive portraits, and fashion lookbooks— all with male subjects!

In this video, I show you the 3 lighting setups that help me make money when photographing men; headshots, commercial fashion, and athlete portraits.

Let’s take a look.

Headshots (1-3 lights):
Main Light: 3ft octabox
Rim Light: 1x4ft strip softbox
Background light: 10 or 20-degree grid

Commercial Fashion/Lookbook (1-2 lights):
Main light: Large umbrella with diffusion
Fill: White V-Flat

Athlete Portraits (3 lights):
Main Light: White Beauty Dish (with and without grid)
Rim lights: 2 1x4ft strip softboxes

Remember, for any of these setups you can swap out modifiers if you wish to change the quality of light. For example, for the men’s headshot, you could use a beauty dish as the main light if you wanted a bit more contrast and sculpting. Your background choice will also mark a big difference to the final result. A brown/beige background (Savage Universal Beige or Pecan) is a great choice for bringing out skin tones and creating a welcoming result.
