The reason for your travel could be tourism, work, business, medical, studying, etc, etc. In order to understand where you can go and what countries you can visit, you must first understand the visa type you received.

Once you have been approved for you Schengen Visa, look on the visa and evaluate the entry visa criteria, as it will outline exactly what countries you can or cannot visit. This is what each border crossing that you will face reviews prior to approving you to pass into their country.

03:02 - Single Entry Schengen Visa
Getting access to a Schengen Visa will not typically prevent you from visiting other Schengen Countries (it is very rare). This type of visa allows you to only enter the Schengen Region ONCE. So, if you go into Italy (Schengen Country) and then to the UK (non-Schengen Country), you are unable to go back to France (Schengen Country) - as you have already entered the Schengen Region once.

03:54 - Double Entry Schengen Visa
This type of visa allows you to enter the Schengen Region TWICE and only twice, no more than that. Which means, you could travel to Italy (Schengen Country) and then go to the UK (non-Schengen Country) and the travel to France (Schengen Country) on the same Visa but you are not able to re-enter the region again. This visa type is very rare and you most probably will not have the situation.

I recommend that you apply for this visa, as long as you are able to provide evidence as to why your travel requires it. It means you can travel in and out of the Schengen region unlimited times over the validity of the visa (eg, 12 months) as long as you do not stay within the region for more than 90 days out of a 180 day period.

The only situations I have seen where a traveller has been limited to just one country is if they are travelling for transit or medical reasons. Outside of this, the visa you are applying for grants you access to all of the countries within the Schengen Region.
