Germany is a sort of holy place for beer. They re one of the leading beer consumers in the world. They also export a lot of beer. All of this comes with a long history and culture. One of the more interesting is the very old and possibly earliest example of food regulation. This is commonly known as the Bavarian/ German beer purity law or in German Reinheitsgebot.

This law is more than 500 years old now and is still in effect. It controlled the ingredients, price and punishments around beer brewers and retailers. It is also a key part of the history of the unification of Bavaria and Greater Germany.

If you ever get to a point where you want to ship beer to Germany this rule does not apply as an importer. It can as an exporter. BUT. Beer brewed in Germany for domestic consumption may need to follow it but beer brewed exclusively for export is exempt. Some brewers are using this loop by exporting to a wholesaler who than sells it back to a German retailer. In this respect it has similar attributes to champagne.
