Deep Purple is the stuff of legend. The stories behind its songs and the lives of its individual members could fill volumes. There's the bombastic personality of guitarist Ritchie Blackmore; the energy of its vocalists - including Ian Gillan, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes; its powerhouse rhythm section - drummer Ian Paice and bassist Roger Glover; as well as the phenomenal keyboards of the late Jon Lord.

I'll save the band's colorful history for another time. By 1972 it had made four studio albums and one live album that secured its position as one of the triumvirate of British "heavy metal" bands. Following up on these successes was a challenge, and with Ian Gillan and Roger Glover leaving, some large shoes needed filling. Enter Coverdale and Hughes.

Known as the "Mark III" lineup of the group, Deep Purple recorded two "progressive metal" albums that would inspire artists for decades: Burn and Stormbringer. Both albums' title songs dealt with cataclysmic, mythical forces and featured virtuosi musicianship combined with the vocal acrobatics and harmonies of David Cloverdale and Glenn Hughes. (The duo were often compared with the sixties' Sam and Dave due to the blending of their distinct voices.)

Despite the great performers within the band before or after this era - it was a unique period for the band. It debuted "Burn" live at the California Jam concert at Ontario Motors Speedway on April 6, 1974, alongside Black Sabbath, ELP and others.

Hold On: David Coverdale, in an interview, described Ritchie Blackmore's bouncing, bluesy lead in this song: "He played it with his thumb." It was as if Blackmore, not quite satisfied with the lineup or the material, decided to "thumb his nose" at it through his playing. (He quit after the next album and formed the group Rainbow, before reuniting with his former mates ten years later.)

Anyway - enough! Here are my vocal renditions of "Stormbringer" and "Hold On," recorded in November, 2025, prior to a storm hitting the California coast. How appropriate.
