The BMW i7 and 7 Series G70 have seen an enhancement that is rarely found in civilian vehicles - the VR9 ballistic certification. This certification, marking one of the pinnacle standards in civilian vehicle armoring, is now associated with the i7 Protection, reputedly the first sedan of its class to have undergone this treatment as per OEM (original equipment manufacturer) engineering. This feat was accomplished entirely in-house by BMW and was rolled out from their Plant Dingolfing.

The resilience of the i7 Protection is exceptional. Its armored steel body can withstand armor-piercing rounds, particularly the 7.62 X 54 R ammunition. This robustness extends to the entire exterior, which has been constructed using a hot-formed steel alloy. Further, the roof and underbody have been armored to ensure protection against threats from above and explosive devices beneath. The internal combustion engine variant of this series comes with a uniquely designed fuel tank that can self-seal upon bullet impact, preventing fuel loss.

BMW hasn’t simply focused on the functional aspects; they have also catered to the aesthetics. The goal was to create a discreet appearance, with minimal differentiation from the regular 7 Series. Hence, the run-flat tires and the flag holder are the only distinct exterior elements. These tires, particularly, are 20-inch alloys paired with Michelin PAX run-flat tires. Even after a total loss of pressure, these tires can maintain speeds of up to 50 mph.

Underneath this fortified exterior is an interior that does not compromise on luxury. The vehicle is equipped with state-of-the-art features such as the BMW Curved Display, a 28-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound system, and plush reclining seats with footrests. Although a notable omission is the 31-inch 8K retractable screen, which might not be considered essential for its intended audience, including authorities, state leaders, and specific private individuals.

As for its performance, the i7 Protection sources its power from the motors used in the i7 M70. These motors churn out 544 horsepower and 549 pound-feet of torque. However, the armor does weigh the vehicle down, making its 0-62 mph acceleration time a tad slow at 9 seconds, and limiting the top speed to 99 mph. The electric variant has an estimated range of about 210 miles, which, given the added weight of the armor, is understandably less than the standard i7 M70’s 295-mile range. For now, BMW remains tight-lipped about the pricing, but it is anticipated to surpass the i7 M70’s $168,500 US MSRP, especially since the armored version will be exclusive to the European market.
