Village of Tanji, Gambia - visiting Tanji Fishing Village in Gambia. Let's visit the very iconic Tanji Fishing Village (also spelt Tanjeh or Tanje) which is close to the Atlantic Ocean beach, in the northern section of the Kombo South District, West Coast Region of The Gambia, in West Africa. The Tanji Fishing Village is 30km by road from the capital of Banjul, and approximately 12km southwest of Kololi resort, and adjacent to the Kombo Coastal Road.
We are going to visit Tanji Fishing Village very early in the morning and we will watch the frantic activity that is taking place as soon as the fishing boats arrive back after a busy night in the Atlantic Ocean. We are going to visit the beach of Tanji Fishing Village which is directly in front of the fishing village and is a fish landing site, and which is a very active, working beach. Here one finds a beach it scattered with old, shredded gillnets, thrown away seafood, plastic bags and bottles, and all sorts of discarded items floating on the water or resting on the shore. The air is filled with the odour of smoked fish; an unimaginable number of seagulls hover overhead looking for scraps, fishermen land their night catch from long African pirogues, passing buckets of catch onto the heads of local women, who then ferry it to the shore. Activity is frenzied and messy, but surprisingly efficient.
