Released in June 1987, The Beginning compiles Mercyful Fate’s earliest official recordings before Melissa. The opening track “Doomed by the Living Dead” is a 1987 studio re-recording, while tracks 2-5 are the legendary 1982 Mercyful Fate EP (often called the “Nuns Have No Fun” EP), and tracks 6-9 are the complete BBC Friday Rock Show session from March 1982. Raw, aggressive and dripping with occult atmosphere, these songs showcase King Diamond’s already unmistakable falsetto and the band’s unique blend of heavy and speed metal that would soon explode onto the world stage.
