The Georges River is a beautiful part of the Sydney landscape and provides many opportunities for the community to relax, recreate and enjoy the natural environments the river provides.

The Georges River is situated in Sydney's south and is approximately 100 kilometres long. The river flows through Liverpool, Chipping Norton Lake Scheme and then flows east through Bankstown and out to Botany Bay.

Como bridge takes the Illawarra railway line across the Georges River between Oatley and Como. The original bridge remained in use until 1972 when the new double line, pre-stressed concrete structure alongside it was completed and began taking rail traffic. The old bridge was saved from demolition as it carries the pipeline from Woronora Dam to the reservoirs at Penshurst, a function that commenced in 1945 and continues today. The bridge is used today as a footbridge and cycle way.
