The FBI announced Friday that it successfully thwarted a terrorist attack planned for New Year's Eve in Mint Hill, North Carolina. Christian Sturdivant, an 18-year-old resident, has been arrested and federally charged with attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. According to federal investigators, Sturdivant was inspired by ISIS and had been planning to attack a grocery store and the Burger King restaurant where he worked.
FBI Special Agent in Charge James Barnacle stated that what could have been a national tragedy was prevented through the diligent work of law enforcement. Authorities revealed that Sturdivant had been planning this specific attack for about a year, spending considerable time consuming ISIS-related content online and creating TikTok videos about the terrorist organization. During a search of his home, investigators found detailed notes outlining his attack plan, along with weapons including hammers and knives hidden under his bed, tactical gloves, and a Kevlar vest.
U.S. Attorney Russ Ferguson explained that Sturdivant's intended targets included non-Muslim individuals, LGBTQ community members, and law enforcement and military personnel. The suspect had been communicating with undercover FBI agents and NYPD officers whom he believed were ISIS members. This wasn't Sturdivant's first brush with violence; he came to the FBI's attention in 2022 as a minor when his grandfather stopped him from attempting to kill a neighbor with a hammer and knife. He underwent psychological care following that incident, though no charges were filed at the time.
Officials believe Sturdivant was acting alone in this plot, which remains under active investigation. This case follows other recent foiled terrorist plots across the United States, including incidents in Michigan and Los Angeles.
