Same trumpet, new look.

On Sunday, May 21, the next step of CBS News’ (and CBS in general) branding language was revealed in a new look open for their one of their two flagship Sunday programs, Sunday Morning. Beyond the network- and station-wide refreshing project, which began in 2020, this marks another milestone for their morning franchise. On the heels of the momentum charted by the second variation of “CBS This Morning”, the decision was made in 2021 to base all their morning programs around the program that gave us the familiar surly sun and trumpet fanfare (Gottfried Reiche’s “Abblasen”, performed by legendary jazz musician Wynton Marsalis since 2004), and also the long-form storytelling it’s known for. For the record, from 1979 to 1982, the programs for all days of the week were represented by the trumpet and sun as well.

While CBS Mornings and CBS Saturday Morning immediately got their respective looks - albeit one week apart - SunMo took a bit, with its own graphics changes made incrementally. The open itself replaces the bones of a 20-year old version, but also is an evolution of it. The previous open had its own incremental changes from a general collage of topics to one reflecting the specific stories in each issue, and even adding the host’s name under the title, which started under the twilight years of second host Charles Osgood’s tenure. (And that HDTV conversion, too)

Ironically, the new open debuted during its “…by Design” issue, highlighting all manner of designing.
