Minoh city is one of the many northern suburbs of Osaka, a relatively new one, but rapidly developing and with the efforts to improve its appeal, particularly in case of tourism.

In the past, the mountains to the north of Minoh were the center of teaching called Shugendo – a syncretic religion, with a lot of ascetic practices, mysticism, being closer to nature and further from civilisation, and esoteric parts of Buddhism such as Shingon. Their legendary founder En no Gyoja is believed to be buried nearby.

Many temples were formed in the mountainous area. One of those centres of ascetic practice was the Minoh waterfall. Common people also visited the falls to watch, it had become quite famous, in fact one of the most famous waterfalls in the country, appearing on art and in literature.

Tourist flow grew in 1910s, when railroad reach the town. Different shops and restaurants has been built along the road from station to the falls. 1950s were marked by the creating of the entomological museum. And in 1967, 100 years after Emperor Meiji was enthroned, the area became the national park with the massive work on the infrastructure improvement followed. Massive onsen-hotel also was built in 1960s, thus Minoh became an onsen town. Recently craft beer from Minoh brewery also marked the city on a map once more.

But after all Minoh Park remains the main attraction in the area. It’s good in every season, but autumn foliage of countless maples is particularly appealing. Fresh green leaves of April to early May are also beautiful.

Filmed in early May 2022.

Directions: Minoh park located north of Hankyu Minoh station, about thirty minutes from Hankyu Osaka-Umeda station in central Osaka. Note that you have to change the train at the station called Ishibashi Handai-mae. And if you travelling using Hankyu lines either from Kobe or from Kyoto, you have to make a change at Juso station in Osaka, but both changes are rather easily navigable because Minoh is a popular destination.
