So I just finished an Analysis course that was taught using “The Moore Method”, and I decided to make a video talking about what The Moore Method is, the pros / cons, and my experience / opinion on it. Here’s a quick summary:

The Moore Method (sometimes called Inquiry-Based Learning) is a method of teaching that is used most commonly in advanced math courses. Instead of sitting and listening to the instructor lecture about a topic, students are given definitions and are asked to think independently to come up with their own proofs and solutions to problems. Here are the pros and cons as I see them:

Pros:
Promotes individual study and critical thinking skills.
Allows students to learn and understand the material in a way that makes sense for them, instead of relying on a textbook or instructor.
Students get more of a sense of accomplishment than they do in lecture based courses.

Cons:
It’s hard to get feedback and hard to tell if the work you’ve done is 100% correct or not.
There’s not enough time to cover as much material as you could cover in a more lecture based course.
It’s hard to relate the material to outside material. Instructors often give vocabulary / definitions that are unique to the class to make it harder for students to get outside help. This makes it hard to tell what you are proving.

Conclusion:
Adjusting to The Moore Method was a very stressful experience, but once I did, I began to appreciate it and actually ended up learning a lot. I’m still torn on whether I prefer The Moore Method vs a more traditional lecture based approach, because I think both teaching methods have their own strengths and weaknesses. My goal is to come up with a way to combine principles from both methods to hopefully eliminate some of the negatives associated with each and also appeal to students who prefer one teaching method over the other. I think it’s possible.

So my question for you all: Have you taken a class that was taught using The Moore Method (or a similar method?) What were your thoughts? Do you prefer this method of teaching over a more traditional lecture based approach? I’d love to hear some of y’all opinions and experiences. I start a doctoral program in mathematics education in the fall, so this is a topic I’m very interested in. Thanks!
