Today’s coaster is Monte Makaya at Terra Encantada in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. Built by Intamin, this coaster opened in 1998 as the second coaster ever to invert eight times, tying the world record previously held solely by Dragon Khan at PortAventura Park in Salao, Catalonia, Spain, which opened three years prior in 1995. Monte Makaya featured a loop, a cobra roll, a double corkscrew, and a triple heartline roll finale to reach eight inversions. Monte Makaya was also the first time Intamin attempted the inversion record, and would later build off of the design, omitting the final helix, and adding a fourth roll to the finale and one more heartline roll before the final brake run. This new design was first seen on Colossus at Thorpe Park, the world’s first coaster to break the ten-inversion barrier. As for Monte Makaya though, it would close with its park in 2010, before being bought by Mirabilandia, another park in Brazil. However, it still sits in pieces to this day, and no one knows when or even if it will open.
