NATO Research Vessel Alliance marked a poignant change of command in Portsmouth’s historic Royal Navy dockyard as Comandante Ottavio Patulli handed over to Comandante Stefano Febbraro.

Taking the sword and the ship, Febbraro called Alliance "a special vessel – the 'White Lady' – with an Italian crew under the tricolour and a NATO scientific team. She publicly represents the two souls of NATO: the military element that leads and enables the civilian scientific mission."

This summer, Alliance ran Baltic and Arctic sea trials for NATO — testing sensors and tracking to counter threats to undersea pipelines and cables, and mapping how sound travels beneath the marginal ice to improve submarine detection.

Under Febbraro’s command, Alliance now returns to La Spezia to prepare for future scientific missions.
