The Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon-test (also: Mann-Whitney-U-test) is a non-parametric statistical method that is used in place of the two-sample t-test, for instance when the data is not normally distributed. This test is used to assess whether the medians of two independent groups are different. You can use a dependent variable that is at least on the ordinal scale.


For example:

I have two groups: males and females. I want to test for the gender pay gap, meaning that women earn less than men. Even though the income as the dependent variable is on the ratio scale, I can still use the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon-test.
