Part 73 of a series charting the history of West Ham United during the tenure of its favourite son. With seven games to go West Ham look dead and buried but they go on an amazing run winning five of the next six, against Millwall, Newcastle, Luton, Sheffield Wednesday and Forest, which means victory at Anfield on the final day would see them safe. Liverpool need to win to put pressure on Arsenal and complete the double. Despite an heroic fight, the Hammers succumb 5-1 and are relegated, just one win from safety. Two weeks later, John Lyall is summoned to the house of Chairman Len Cearns and advised that his contract, which expires in the summer, will not be renewed. Lyall leaves West Ham after 34 years in various roles, 15 as manager.
