STORYLINE:
Miners in Peru marched through the streets of the capital on Thursday calling on lawmakers to allow them to continue working.

Peruvian representatives were debating whether to extend a temporary permit for informal miners to extract gold and copper until the end of 2027 and on whether to reinstate 50,000 miners who had been outlawed.

Permits for informal miners were last issued in 2016 and have been extended since then.

The Congress' Energy and Mines commission had issued a preliminary extension past Tuesday, which the plenary still needs to approve to take effect.

The government of interim President Jose Jeri has not indicated whether the extension will be approved.

The issuing of permits have been postponed since 2016 without any government managing to register and collect taxes from thousands of miners who, according to evidence from the prosecutor's office, use mercury to extract gold in protected natural areas which pollutes Amazonian rivers crucial for Indigenous populations.

There are three types of mining in Peru: formal, informal, which has been in the process of legalization for several years, and illegal, which operates in prohibited areas and has links to criminal groups.
