Every once in a while, to honor a special day or event, the letters that spell "Google" on the company's homepage include a whimsical doodle. A Google "doodle" is the logo design that appears on the Google homepage periodically to celebrate special events, holidays, or the lives of artists and inventors. Andy Warhol, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, and Frida Kahlo, are among the artists and innovators who have been honored with doodles on the Google homepage. The first Google doodle was designed to commemorate Bastille Day in 2000. Since then, the Google doodle team has celebrated and marked worldwide events, anniversaries, and holidays with more than 1,000 doodles appearing worldwide on international domains.

For four years now, Google has invited U.S. students to create their own Google doodle as part of the Doodle 4 Google competition. Last year, 20,000 schools participated and Google received more than 33,000 entries. This year, they are calling for submission on the theme, "What I'd like to do someday..." offering students a blank canvas to dream big for their future. From becoming a doctor and curing cancer to inventing rocket shoes that let anyone fly, this open-ended focus is intended to encourage creative, inspiring, and fun ideas and designs.
