Scott Joplin (1868–1917), known as the "King of Ragtime," was an African American composer and pianist. His early work, Maple Leaf Rag, was one of the first pieces of sheet music to sell over a million copies. The title refers to the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, Missouri, where Joplin often performed.
