The Canadian Death Race - 22 hours of carnage - Tom Blackett

Since the start of the millennium, racers have come to The Canadian Rockies to cheat death in one of the world's toughest ultramarathons.

The 125km course begins and ends on a 4200-foot plateau, passes over three mountain summits, and not only includes over 17,000 feet of elevation change, but a major river crossing at the spectacular Hell's Gate Canyon at the confluence of the Smoky and Sulphur rivers. Furthermore, racers MUST keep their wits about them, as large chunks of the course are home to black bears, grizzly bears and mountain lions.

During this event, I experienced extremes of hot and cold, stomach issues, giant blisters, headaches, chafing, and a few more personal problems which I'll keep to myself.

As always, I'd like to thank Chris Emmerson for putting together such an awesome short film - it's a real privilege to have such an epic memento from such a special event. Thankyou to Kate and Shan as well - you were the best support team I could have asked for.

Lastly I want to thank the race organisers and volunteers for making the whole thing possible.. you were first class in every single way.

Good luck to all future competitors!
