Mayhem in a glass!!

This is part two of a new series of whiskeys from Killowen, the "Sagaland" series. Each of the whiskeys will correspond to a different Irish legend, in this case, the Maids of Mayhem. I won't go into the details of the legend here, but Killowen have partnered with the Irish Mythology Podcast and you can check out their episode on the Maids below!

As to the whiskey, it's 21% Unmalted Barley, 50% Smoked Malted Barley, 14% Oats, 7% Wheat and 7% Rye. It 3 years and 4 months in an ex-bourbon cask, before spending 8 months in a Rupert and Rothschild Wine Cask, meaning the whiskey is about 4 years old.

It's non chill filtered, natural color, and comes in at a cask strength of 59.8%, so let's get to the tasting notes!

Killowen Sagaland Maids of Mayhem Tasting Notes:
Nose
It's young, but creamy on the nose, the peat is immediately apparent, but balanced with plenty of wine cask influence, black pepper, but all on top of that creamy vanilla custard base

Palate
The heat of ABV heralds a big arrival of peat, wine influence, sharp blackberries, cherries, strawberries and plenty of black pepper.

Finish
The fruity notes fade, leaving the ABV tingle, peat smoke, oak tannins and spice

One thing I've found with Killowen releases is that sometimes they're better with water, so I added a few drops, and I think it became much more rounded and enjoyable

Nose (with water)
The wine is more apparent with water, along with lemon citrus. It's less creamy, but also less full-on with softer pepper and peat notes, with almost a dark chocolate note

Palate (with water)
The palate is much softer, sweeter and creamier. the mouthfeel is a little richer, as it doesn't have that huge hit of ABV and peat, making for a slightly more balanced taste between the spicy pepper, earthy peat and fruity wine notes

Finish (with water)
It's sweeter on the finish, with the same notes of peat and oak spice at the end, just a bit more balanced.

Either way you drink it, this is a lovely little drop, but to me, I will keep on adding a few drops of water every time I pour a glass.
