Former treasurer Josh Frydenberg has called on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to declare the firebombing of a synagogue in Melbourne as a “terrorist attack”.

Emergency services were called to Addas Israel Synagogue of Melbourne in Ripponlea, near St Kilda, on Friday at about 4:10am after calls about a building fire.

The synagogue has sustained significant damage.

“The first thing the Prime Minister needs to do is he and his government need to declare yesterday’s attack at the Addas Synagogue a terrorist event.

“There was a firebombing of a place of worship with people inside who have been injured as a result.

“The legislation is very clear … it is a terrorist attack, and it needs to be declared as such.”
