Chapter 4: “With My Lesser Self”
This song is a continuation of the themes of track 3, but a little more tragic and decidedly less hopeful. The titles were made to interlock: In Reach, Out of Touch With My Lesser Self. The title itself comes from the colloquialism “my better half” as used in a romantic context, but in this case we obviously wanted to play off of the inverse of that idea.

When this song was originally written, it was designed as an instrumental track with the thought process being that it’s really hard or impossible to find the words that can covey the feeling of love lost, so it makes the most sense to let the music do the talking. We recorded the song this way in the studio, but we finished a little earlier than we expected to and Johnny told us that he thought we should at least test out some vocals on it because he had a different vision for how it could sound.

In the end we were really glad that we tried it out because it made the track a lot more emotional and raw. Nathan wrote the lyrics to this track as well as the vocal pattern, so it felt right to have him sing it. We still kept the lyrics pretty minimal so that we could maintain the original effect we were going for and let the instruments do the majority of the heavy lifting but still incorporate some vocals to direct the listener. The lyrics themselves are pretty self-explanatory in terms of their meaning; it’s meant to be an honest, sincere expression of a person in a pretty dark place who is struggling to move past a painful experience.

In the last part of the song during the falsetto melody, you can hear a faint guitar lead that gradually starts to redirect the tone of the album from saddened to empowered. This guitar lead is the same one that starts playing at the beginning of track 5,“Prayer of the Prey.”
