This makes it feel like a kind of holiday at home for Dutch visitors. The hills are steep but not high. The Geul river, a tributary of the Meuse, flows through Valkenburg. Due to the steep hills, this river floods relatively often during heavy rainfall.

Ontdek de mooie Trage Tocht-wandelroute in Zuid-Limburg!
Deze wandeling voert je door het schilderachtige Geuldal, langs historische kastelen zoals Schaloen en Genhoes, en eindigt in het charmante stadje Valkenburg. Als kers op de taart zie je in de video ook de beroemde kerstmarkt van Valkenburg, die een magische winterse sfeer aan deze wandeling toevoegt.

De heuvelachtige landschappen hier zijn allesbehalve typisch voor Nederland. Je vindt deze unieke landschappen alleen in dit deel van het land. Dit zorgt voor een soort vakantiegevoel in eigen land voor Nederlandse bezoekers. De heuvels zijn steil maar niet hoog. Door Valkenburg stroomt de rivier de Geul, een zijrivier van de Maas. Vanwege de steile heuvels overstroomt deze rivier relatief vaak bij hevige regenval.
