Subodha Vedanta 02/05 - Talk by Swami Aparajitananda, Chinmaya Mission Chicago - Yamunotri. Talk was given in CM Gokul, Bakersfield, California.

In this talk, Pujya Swamiji explains the next three verses of Subhod Vedanta, which describe the essential nature of a Guru.
In the first verse of the section about the Guru, Pujya Guruji (Swami Tejomayananda) outlines seven qualifications of a true Guru. Each qualification is described with precise adjectives that define the essential qualities a Guru must possess:
• Śrotriya: One who is well-versed in the scriptures.
• Brahma-niṣhṭha: Established in the knowledge of Brahman (the ultimate reality).
• Na eva kāma-hataḥ: Not affected by worldly desires.
• Dayālu: Compassionate towards others.
• deśikḥ: One who can show the right path.
• dakṣaḥ: Very alert and competent.
• Śiṣya-praśna-nivārakaḥ: Capable of clearing the doubts of disciples.
Swamiji beautifully elaborates on each of these qualifications and debunks many common misconceptions we have about the Guru. He also encourages us to introspect and reflect on the category of Śiṣya (disciple) to which we belong.
The most important point in the Guru- Śiṣya relationship is that the Guru does not merely address the disciple's questions. Rather, the Guru addresses the temperament and readiness of the disciple for their spiritual growth.
In the next two verses, Pujya Guruji further reveals the nature of a true Guru. Pujya Swamiji summarises the essence of these two shlokas as follows: "The Guru allows God to guide the disciple through him, as the Guru knows he is nothing but an instrument in the hands of God. Ultimately, the disciple does not belong to the Guru, but to God."
