A prototype rescue truck developed by the US Department of Energy (DOE) has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled without refueling. The hydrogen fuel cell-powered truck, named H2Rescue, achieved an impressive 1,806 miles (2,906 km) on 386 pounds (175 kg) of hydrogen. The record-breaking journey was verified by a Guinness World Records adjudicator, ensuring the hydrogen tank remained sealed throughout the trip. This achievement underscores the growing potential of hydrogen-powered vehicles for emergency response and clean transportation.

The H2Rescue truck is designed to provide critical relief during natural disasters. It operates with zero emissions, offering a clean and efficient solution for emergency response teams. The vehicle is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell engine, a high-energy-density lithium-ion battery, and a powerful 250-kilowatt traction motor. It can deliver 25 kW of power, enough to support 20 homes or shelters, while running quietly and producing only water and heat as byproducts, making it ideal for disaster zones.

In addition to its power generation capabilities, the H2Rescue features a climate-controlled boxed bed that can serve as a mobile command center or emergency shelter. The vehicle also produces treatable water from its fuel cell, which could be critical during emergencies. Weighing about 33,000 pounds (15,000 kg) and classified as a Class 7 heavy-duty truck, the H2Rescue is roadworthy and can travel extended distances with minimal environmental impact. It can carry up to 388 pounds (176 kg) of hydrogen at 700 bar, allowing it to operate for long periods without refueling.

The H2Rescue's record-breaking run was part of a larger effort to develop alternative technologies for emergency response. The truck's potential to replace traditional gasoline-powered vehicles could result in significant environmental benefits, saving over 1,800 gallons of gasoline annually and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2.5 metric tons each year. This project began as a response to wildfires in California and has since grown into a promising solution for clean, efficient disaster relief operations.
