The Old Farmer's Almanac has released its 2025-26 winter outlook, predicting mild temperatures and below-average snowfall for Wisconsin. However, the Almanac's methods, which rely on a secret formula involving sunspots and lunar cycles, have been criticized for lacking scientific rigor.

A study from the University of Illinois found the Almanac's accuracy to be around 52% -- essentially a coin flip. In contrast, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration bases its forecasts on advanced climate models, historical data and real-time observations.

NOAA's early winter outlook, released in July, suggested a La Niña pattern, which typically brings colder and snowier conditions to the Great Lakes region.

For those seeking a more localized forecast, FOX 11 Chief Meteorologist Patrick Powell has been providing winter outlooks for Northeast Wisconsin for nearly two decades. His track record includes eight forecasts that were spot-on, six that were close and only four that missed the mark.

As winter approaches, Wisconsinites are reminded to prepare for the season's challenges, including shoveling and bundling up.
