Many people were illiterate in the sixteenth century—even the clergy responsible for teaching God’s Word. Worse still, those in the church who could read were no longer recognizing Scripture as the central authority. Instead, corrupted traditions enslaved the consciences of many, driving them to try and earn God’s favor. As a young Martin Luther despaired of ever being good enough to enter heaven, he discovered the Bible teaches another way of salvation. In this message, Stephen Nichols introduces the German monk whose conscience was “captive to the Word of God.”
