We are just about a month away from the launch of Destiny 2’s next season, which will also come with our first real look at The Witch Queen expansion from Bungie. But season 15 is key as a bridge to that point, and it also seems destined to be much longer than a normal season, maybe 5-6 months, given the Witch Queen’s delay and unknown release date. I wanted to talk about what I think the focus of next season will be, and why I think we’re heading in this direction. This is not based on any leaked information, as I have avoided that one lengthy leak document that keeps getting passed around, to a certain extent. If there is anything about season 15 on it, I haven’t heard it. Just like I was incorrectly calling season 14 Season of Glass before we got the Splicer name, I will now incorrectly be calling season 15 Season of the Wish until I hear otherwise. The 15th wish is a key piece of Destiny history, the final wish tied to Savathun, Riven and the fate of the Dreaming City. And that’s where I think the focus is going to be this season, and not just because the numbers conveniently line up. So, first off, in Season of the Hunt, we received a message in Zavala’s office at the tail end of a bunch of Osiris messages from none other than the missing Mara Sov herself, who claims she’s returning. I’ve transcribed the message in full here:“To all corners of the system, I’ve emptied the armories on the fringe. Sent Corsair warship fleets. Deployed Harbingers. And yet…the Black Fleet persists. I know what it’s taken from you. Petra…I’ve been away too long, and for that, I apologize. Your compassion and leadership have been a boon to me – and our people. This all started with the Dreaming City. I shall return to finish it. (sigh) Savathun will be waiting.”So, this very much says that Mara Sov is returning to the Dreaming City, and that seems like an event that would take place before the Witch Queen, not during it, when the focus will obviously be the new zone (currently theorized as Old Chicago). So my money is on next season. Past that, events from this season have aligned to set up a storyline that could result in the ultimate breaking of the Curse of the Dreaming City. Quria, the Vex Taken Mind and pet of Savathun, was responsible for the time loop aspect of the Dreaming City curse, the repeating three-week cycle. In theory, with her death, that should be a major step forward in how we cleanse the Dreaming City of the curse once and for all, and I would not be surprised to see Quria’s destruction open the door for that as the main storyline next season. I don’t know what the “final” step would be in totally dispelling the curse, but that may be where we’re headed. It also makes sense to me that we’re approaching an apex in the Crow storyline.
