Andrew Johnson, born in 1808, rose from humble beginnings as a tailor to become the 17th President of the United States. A self-taught man, Johnson climbed the political ladder in Tennessee, serving as governor and U.S. senator. When Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in 1865, Johnson, as Vice President, assumed the presidency during the turbulent Reconstruction era. His lenient approach to the Southern states and resistance to civil rights for freed slaves led to a clash with Congress. In 1868, Johnson was impeached by the House of Representatives for violating the Tenure of Office Act by dismissing Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. He narrowly avoided removal from office after being acquitted by the Senate, completing his term with a controversial legacy.
