Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common viral illness that usually affects infants and children, though adults can also get it. It is caused by viruses from the **enterovirus group**, most commonly the **coxsackievirus**.
Symptoms:
**Fever**: Often the first sign of HFMD.
**Sore throat**.
**Mouth sores**: Painful red spots that can become ulcers.
**Rash**: Red spots or blisters appear on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet, and sometimes on the knees, elbows, or buttocks.

How it spreads:
Close contact with an infected person.
Contact with contaminated surfaces, respiratory droplets, or feces.
The virus can be present in a person’s body for weeks after symptoms disappear.
Treatment:
There is no specific treatment for HFMD. It is usually mild and resolves on its own in 7-10 days.
**Pain relief**: Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
**Hydration**: Ensuring the affected individual drinks plenty of fluids, especially if mouth sores make swallowing painful.

Prevention:
Frequent handwashing.
Cleaning and disinfecting frequently touched surfaces.
Avoiding close contact with infected individuals.

HFMD is typically not serious, but in rare cases, complications like viral meningitis or encephalitis can occur.
