About our guest:
Kapila Venu is a practitioner of Kutiyattam, a traditional classical art form of Kerala. It is an art form that prides itself of a 2000 year old heritage. She is an acclaimed artiste the world over and is a recipient of the Kumar Gandharva award. Kapila`s home is in Irinjalakuda near the city of Thrissur in Kerala. Her father G. Venu, a Kutiyattam practitioner and her mother Nirmala Panicker a Mohiniyattam dancer/teacher are both highly respected artists. They founded and run the performer`s studio Natanakairali Research and Performing center for Traditional Arts where Kapila is the Director.
In this interview, Kapila talks about her childhood about how she got drawn to this artform. She talks about her Guru, Guru Ammanur Madhava Chakyar. Her growth as an artist as well her take on various subjects feminism, sustenance of an artist and an art form and her observations on the new generation of artists is shared here. She talks about her relationships with her characters and also describes as to how she went about making the dance video Yakshi.
On the personal front she talks about her relationship with her husband and explains how it works out so beautifully for them, in spite of belonging to very different professional worlds.
This interview explores subjects like the origin of Kuttiyattam, the relationship between Kutiyattam and other traditional art forms like Kathakali, Nangiarkoothu, Ottamthullal, Thaiyyam etc...and how it differs fron them. We also get to see a glimpse of the inner world of an Artist, what she draws inspiration from and her personal relationships as well. This conversation inspires and motivates us to look back at our roots in Kerala and explore the rich cultural art forms we have. Kapila Venu is an inspiration to many actors, dancers and artists and we are very happy to have her on our show.
