Calibrating Blood Testing Machines in DUI Cases in Arizona

How do they calibrate the machine that tests your blood in a DUI case?

It is not as simple as pressing a button and getting a result.

The crime labs needs to "teach" the machine what it sees. By passing what they claim to be known solutions through the machine, the machine will then learn to identify unknown solutions, or so the logic goes.

In this video, Robert shows how the crime labs testing DUI blood samples first run a series of calibrators through the device to create the calibration curve. Then, the machine will plot an unknown sample on the curve and generate a result based on the measurement of the peak area on the graph.

Understanding how this works is important in developing DUI defense tactics to defeat blood testing. There are inherent margins or error and levels of acceptable certainty the crimes labs tolerate. This can create reasonable doubt in DUI cases.
