Akhil Iyer and Shriya Narayan, a couple from Bengaluru now based in Mumbai, have achieved remarkable success with their café, Benne, in Bandra, reportedly earning over ₹1 crore monthly by selling authentic Bengaluru-style benne dosas. Despite lacking an MBA or prior restaurant experience, their passion for the buttery, crispy dosas they grew up with drove them to start this venture. Akhil, a filmmaker and founder of The Artist Collective, and Shriya, a counseling psychologist, launched Benne in May 2024 to bring a slice of Bengaluru’s darshini culture—quick-service, no-frills eateries serving fresh South Indian fare—to Mumbai.
Their journey began with a deep nostalgia for the dosas they couldn’t find in Mumbai. Akhil trained under a dosa master in Bengaluru to perfect the recipe, using IR8 dosa rice, poha, fenugreek, and chana dal to create a thick, crispy dosa with a soft interior, topped with a signature dollop of unprocessed white butter. The café’s minimalist 150–275-square-foot space features self-service kiosks, standing tables, and eco-friendly areca leaf plates, mirroring Bengaluru’s darshinis. The menu is simple, offering benne dosas (plain, masala, podi), ghee podi idlis, vadas, and beverages like iced filter coffee, with vegan options available.
Benne’s success stems from authenticity, quality, and a tech-forward approach, with social media buzz amplifying its popularity. Celebrities like Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Virat Kohli, Anushka Sharma, and others have visited, drawn by the nostalgic flavors and community vibe. Despite challenges like maintaining consistency and managing crowds, Akhil and Shriya’s hands-on approach—overseeing everything from chutney taste to stock checks—has made Benne a sensation, proving that hard work and passion can outshine formal credentials or industry experience. They plan to expand hours, menu offerings, and possibly open a second outlet, cementing their culinary revolution in Mumbai.
