Описание к видео Palliative and Hospice Care of Southern Philippines Medical Center

“My Care, My Comfort”

October is Southern Philippines Medical Center’s Palliative and Hospice Care Awareness Month. Our short video is aligned with the World Hospice and Palliative Care theme, “My Care, My Comfort.” All children and adults facing a life-threatening disease need palliative care as an added layer of support. It aims to enhance quality of life, promote dignity and comfort. Early integration may also positively influence the course of illness.

Palliative care is one of the most misunderstood terms in health care. Embracing palliative care is a tumultuous affair because it is often associated with hospice, end-of-life care, death and dying. The World Health Organization defines Palliative Care as an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual.

This year’s theme reminds us how important it is to talk about a person’s wishes, values, goals, and preferences for care. Diagnosis of a serious or life-threatening disease can trigger the deepest of emotions. As health care workers and responsible citizens, we should strive not only to relieve them of their physical suffering, but also address metaphysical and psychological distress. There is so much altruism in palliative care for it requires a lot of compassion and dedication.

The passing and approval of the National Cancer Control Act and Universal Health Care Law are important milestones in paving the way for palliative care activism to come to fruition. Amidst the chaos surrounding us while facing this unprecedented health crisis, there is comfort and joy knowing that the Department Of Health has recognized the importance of integrating palliative care in our national health system.

Palliative care can bring hope, and a chance to a better quality of life for the seriously-ill children and adults alike.
