Kalambaka, also known as Kalabaka or Kalampaka, is a town and municipality located in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece. This town is famous worldwide because of the legendary monasteries built atop Meteora rocks, located near the eastern and northern parts of the settlement. Kalambaka has a rich history and significant monuments. The town was built on the site of the ancient city of Aiginion (Eginion) during the 4th century BC. During the 10th century, it was known as Stagi and had become a significant center of the Byzantine Empire. The town's oldest and most famous church, built in the 10th century, is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
It contains relics of an ancient Greek temple from the same period. The church is northeast of the town, at the base of a large rock called Agia. It is a must-see monument in Kalambaka because of its age, precious Byzantine frescoes from the 11th and 16th centuries, and the ancient marble visible on the outside walls.
Kalambaka offers a unique experience for tourists visiting Meteora, with various accommodations, including hotels, restaurants, bars, traditional taverns, and gift shops. The bustling main square is a hub of activity in the evenings, providing a lively atmosphere for travellers. The town's old picturesque district, with its narrow cobble-stoned streets and traditional houses, some built right next to the rocks, is a charming sight. Embark on a walking tour of the old town with a local guide to uncover the area's unique beauty and history. The Museum of Meteora Natural History and Mushroom Museum, just a 5-minute walk from the centre of Kalambaka, is a convenient stop for those interested in the natural history of the region and beyond.
Moreover, Kalambaka is renowned for its rich tradition of producing exquisite handmade wood-carved objects and religious icons crafted by local artists who also paint them. Explore the local variety of embroideries, the leather sandals shops, and the local souvenir shops. The town's proximity to the monasteries, just 2 km away, makes it an ideal base for those wishing to visit these legendary sites. While there are 27 monasteries in the region, only six are still in operation and open to the public. Whether you choose to see them by bus, foot or car, these monasteries are a sight to behold. While Kalambaka is primarily known for its incredible setting beneath the astounding Meteora pinnacles, it also offers a tranquil retreat for visitors to relax and reflect.
