In this course the design and components of the operating room (OR) are discussed within the context of its function, which is providing an environment in which surgical procedures can be performed aseptically. Additionally, how the OR is housed within the operation room complex (OR complex) and how this layout pertains to the function of the OR are also discussed. Broadly speaking, the OR complex is divided distinct into zones. The distinction is based partly on the manner in which a specialized air management system produces a gradation in cleanliness between these zones. OR design and OR complex layout are extensive topics. Their discussion here will focus only on: the standard contents of the OR, zoning within the OR complex, climate control, lighting, electricity; supply of gases and vacuum as well as fire safety.
