Sri Veeratteswarar temple is located in Thiru kovilur, on the banks of the Then-Pennai river.
The main deity, Moolavar, is known as Veeratteswarar and the Mother-Periyanayaki or Sivanandavalli.
Lord Shiva in this temple is a Swayambumurthi (self-manifested).
This is one of the eight “Veerattaana Sthalams” of Lord Shiva.
In Hindu mythology, there are eight special places where it is believed that Lord Shiva vanquished various demons . These places are Veeratta Sthalams. In Tamil, this is referred to as “Atta Veerattanam” (“Atta” means eight and “Veeram” means bravery).
Thirukkovilur is the second Veerattana Sthalam where the lord is believed to have vanquished the demon Andhakasura.
The temple has significance for devotees of Bhagavan Ramana maharshi. When Bhagavan came to Tiruvannamalai in 1896, he had come to Tirukovilur on the way. While visiting the Arakantanallur Temple, he sat there immersed in himself. After the puja he requested the temple priest for some prasadam as he was hungry. The priest directed him to follow the temple drummers who were going to Veeratteswar temple and that the offering to the Lord there would be distributed. After the puja in veeratteswarar temple, the temple drummers gave Bhagavan a portion of the prasadam they had received themselves.

An exhaustive description and video of this temple was uploaded earlier in February, 2022 on this channel. Those interested can look it up.

A Kumbhabhishekam for this temple is being performed on 15.9.2024 (beginning from 13.9.24 ). A new wooden Dhwaja stambha was sculpted from a single tree for installation. This wooden stambha is covered with brass plating as is the agamic practice.

The present video was taken on 13th September, while visiting the temple.
