A thousand years ago the Demon King of Nusa Penida decided to invade the fun loving, beautiful island of Bali. He lusted after its beautiful beaches and tropical bounty. He sharpened his knives and created an army motivated by greed and fear and hatred. He built a fleet of ships and launched towards the shores of Bali to conquer its peaceful villages.
Bali is a Hindu utopia, a place of mysticism and magic with no standing army. When the people of Bali saw the ships filled with soldiers arrive at their shores they went to the head shaman who told them to invoke the Barong, the Fun Monster, a creature as powerful as the Kingdom of the Demons, but motivated by love and joy. The Balinese built a giant colorful puppet of the Barong and threw the greatest beach party in their long history of amazing parties and greeted their mortal enemies as family.
When the Demon King and his army arrived on the shores of Bali, they did not meet an army and they did not meet fearful villagers begging for mercy. They found themselves in a joyous celebration. The Demon Army stood dumbfounded and lowered their weapons, celebrated for 2 days and nights and then boarded their ships and went back home to Nusa Penida. The Demon King sulked in defeat and returned home to his temple fortress to never plague the world with his venomous lust for power again.
This is the greatest story of the Barong, the Fun Monster. The Demi-god who defeats evil through joy. He who greets hatred with love. Who embraces every challenge as an opportunity to practice compassion. And in so doing creates paradise on Earth.
