Grian Chatten and four other mates met in college in Dublin and bonded over a common love of poetry - both Beat (Kerouac and Ginsberg) and Irish (Joyce, Yeats, and Kavanagh). They formed a band and took their name from Johnny Fontane, Vito Corleone's godson in The Godfather, later adding "DC" for Dublin City after discovering there was already a band in LA by that name. Originally self-releasing singles, they caught the attention of Stereogum, who described their sound as "a synthesis between post-punk, garage rock, and a kind of gritty, urbane sense of rhythm and narrative". By 2019, they were touring around Europe and North America with the bands Shame and Idles and performing on Jimmy Fallon. Their 2021 sophomore album was nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys. So was their 2024 album Romance, along with the single "Starburster" (a great song but almost unlistenably panic-inducing). In February 2025, the band released a stand-alone single "It's Amazing to be Young", recorded during the Romance sessions and included on the deluxe reissue of the album.
