Behringer UV1 compressor test with a Stellar X2 with USB/digital/bit-streamed audio output to a MacBook Pro M1 Max & recorded in DaVinci Resolve.

A fairly focused test of the Behringer UV1 and its compressor using the Tech Zone Stellar X2. The UV1 is connected via USB to my MacBook Pro and is being recorded straight into DaVinci Resolve.

The idea here is to get an even dynamic output from the UV1 using its compressor and setting a limiter within Resolve that then replicates a finished output. Once recorded the signal can be bypassed from the limiter or just keep the limiter over the channel on playback for final output monitoring.

What I may not have made completely clear in this example, because I was dead excited :) Is that the limiter is only engaged on the mic channel in Resolve during the recording as a monitor to the output buss, basically a confidence monitor of the final end output levels that will be exactly the same after an export from Resolve. This is so that I can get the exact dynamics and level of the final output when recording and playing back the mic recording.

Although this example was to use the Mac and Resolve basically as an audio/field recorder but with one less step in post of having to import a separate audio to be then re-synced with the video file. This type of workflow is also really good for post V/O in Resolve and one that can be 100% reproducible once you have your final settings for the preamp, the mic and any channel settings in Resolve. In fact, this type of workflow is good for any type of audio recording within Resolve.

This is basically testing to get a very consistent level for a particular microphone in a particular setup, in this instance a typical close mic podcast type setup. With the aim to use the same limiter settings that will be used for the final output during the tracking stage.

All settings for the gain staging are done in such a way as to not have any clipping during the recording, monitoring and then the final output for export.

Once I'm settled with a bunch of these tests that I'll be doing over the next month or so with my new mics and preamps. I will do some guides and tutorials about very specific setups and some Resolve specific tutorials for setting up workflows with a couple of USB audio interfaces for results similar to those in this video.
