In a single static shot, typical of very early narrative films, two lovers cuddle and talk passionately, then the gentleman decides to give the lady an innocent peck. This is the first ever moving picture image of a kiss. Follow Up Film:    • Kissing (1900) | Romance At The Turn Of Th...

The kiss was originally from the Broadway musical The Widow Jones (1895), in which Irwin and Rice’s act‑closing smooch had become a crowd favorite. Edison filmed the scene at the request of the New York World newspaper to fuel publicity for both the play and the film. Believe it or not, this film brought the first demand for film censorship, mostly from the Catholic Church.

In 1999, The Kiss was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

James H. White was a Canadian-American filmmaker. He was one of the pioneers of early cinema. He worked as a director, producer, and cinematographer. He also appeared as an actor in several films. He was employed by the Edison Manufacturing Company as Production Head from 1896 to 1902, and directed over 500 short films, both fictional and documentary, a lot of them had no functional story or script.

This film is in the public domain meaning it has been identified as being free of known restrictions under copyright law, including all related and neighboring rights. You can copy, modify, distribute and perform the work, even for commercial purposes, all without asking permission. Corporations lobbied Congress to get U.S. copyright laws extended by 20 years, twice! Because of that, it allows published works to be under copyright for almost a century and corporations to squeeze every last ounce of profit from them even long after the profitability has past. It keeps people from enjoying art, which is the purpose of art.
