This is an update on the radish and winter pea seeds I put in my raised beds August 1 to see if it is realistic to plant them in summer on top.
The planter that received supplemental water grew well while the other one did not grow at all.
I also cheated a little bit by lightly raking the seed in. So, the conclusion is that the seeds will not do well broadcast in summer. But, if you drill them in and inch, and you get some rain, you can develop a nice looking plot by hunting season.
Now that it has been down in the 20s at night, the plot looks pretty well done as far as the brassica (radishes) but the peas are supposed to survive winter and continue to grow in spring.
The growth has created a very nice mat of vegetation that can suppress weeds, bring nutrients to the surface and reduce the need for fertilizer and herbicides. Peas will produced lots of N and the radishes till the soil and bring P from the subsoil. Thus preparing your seedbed for your spring/summer planting of corn, sorghum, field peas, oats or whatever.
