Vijay Koju, who is earning his PhD in computational science at Middle Tennessee State University, served as an intern at the National Institute for Computational Sciences (NICS), University of Tennessee, Knoxville, for 10 weeks during the summer of 2014. He is originally from Nepal. His mentor was Dwayne John of the NICS high-performance computing User Assistance group. John and Koju collaborated with Dr. Justin Baba, who is a joint faculty associate professor in the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Mechanical Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering (MABE) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and a staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The research that Koju and John were engaged in with Dr. Baba involved simulations of the behavior of visible light as it backscatters when passed through a medium. Visible light has the potential to be used in the early detection of diseases such as skin cancer.
