In a year like no other, we’ve had to work hard to continue our commitment to ocean exploration and discovery. 2020 may have been the longest year ever, but these deep-sea sightings helped us get through this challenging time. From a bloom of pyrosomes, also known as sea pickles, to an anchovy dinner for a rockfish, MBARI's remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) encountered some incredible and rare moments in the deep. As we continue to explore the largest and least known habitat on Earth—our ocean—we promise to share our discoveries with you. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did!

Slickhead fish (Alepocephalus sp.) - 900 meters off the Channel Islands
Bacterial mat - 930 meters off southern California
Anchovy school (Engraulis mordax) and Bocaccio rockfish (Sebastes paucipinis) - 150 meters in Monterey Canyon
