In recent years, growing public concern over environmental degradation and human rights violations has elevated corporate responsibility to an urgent imperative. Hundreds of forward-thinking companies have pledged to transform their supply chains to protect ecosystems and people. Yet companies committed to ethical commodity production and sourcing are often unclear about the path forward. As a result, progress has been limited – and deforestation, conversion of ecosystems, and human rights violations continue unabated.

The Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) responded to this challenge by developing an “Accountability Framework” of clear and consistent guidance for setting, implementing, and monitoring supply chain commitments. The Framework is not a new certification system. Rather, it specifies good practices for ethical supply chains, clarifies how companies can use existing tools, and provides new guidance and clarity on topics where it is now lacking. This enables companies to demonstrate progress toward commitments in consistent and credible ways.

In this learning session, Adrienne Stork of Rainforest Alliance/Accountability Framework initiative Backbone Team and Akiva Fishman of WWF discuss the newly launched Accountability Framework and explain how this resource can help companies, civil society and governments alike to better align efforts and accelerate progress towards achieving ethical supply chain commitments.
