Russian forces continued battles with guerrillas in Chechnya's
second town Sunday (17/12) as Russia's representatives in the
rebel republic claimed local leadership elections were a success.
Chechen independence guerrillas, who stormed Gudermes in a
surprise attack on Thursday, were still in control of much of the
town, fighting with pockets of Russian troops holding out in the
train station and a military command post.
