I'm back again this week and today we are exploring a point I touched on last video, in using ChatGPT to make a text based adventure game for us! I hope you're ready for some intense storytime followed by some prompt engineering! Enjoy!

"Let’s play a text based adventure.

You are to be the narrator and game master of this adventure which will take place in the Dungeons and Dragons setting of the Forgotten Realms, on the Sword Coast. You are to come up with a big bad evil guy, complete with a backstory and motive for his actions as well as a crew of minions to go with him. He is to have a complex and intricate dungeon of your design that I will have to navigate with my character.

The dungeon may have any combination of enemies, traps and treasure and you are to describe in emotive and vivid detail what each dungeon room looks like when my character enters the room.

This game will use a simplified version of the Dungeons and Dragons combat and exploration system.


Characters in this game will have several values assigned to them;
1. Any number of Hit Points. This dictates how much health a character has before it dies.
2. Armour Class between 0 and 20. This dictates how hard a character is to hit.
3. Any amount of damage. This dictates how much damage a character deals to an opposing character when it lands a hit.

You may design my enemies to have any combination of hit points, damage and armour class, however you are to keep it reasonable in regards to me, the player character so I will have a fair chance at beating the game. Combat will be turn based, where we both roll a 20 sided die and if I have the higher number I go first but if you have the higher number, you go first.

Then, we take turns rolling the 20 sided die to perform an action.
Actions can be any of the following:
1. An attack. If our roll of the die is higher than the enemy’s armour class, then we hit them and deal damage to their hit points. For example, if I hit one of your minions, I deal 2 damage because my sword does two damage.
2. Object Manipulation. Instead of attacking, the action is used to move something, activate something or throwing something. For example, I can try to push a bookshelf over to hit the enemy. You are to decide the number I need to beat to be able to successfully push over the bookshelf when I roll the 20 sided die. This number is called the DC of an action.
3. Social Manipulation. Instead of attacking, the action is used to say something to fool, confuse or otherwise persuade the enemy to do what you want them to do using spoken language. For example, I try to say "You should work for me instead, i'll pay you better than the big bad evil guy" to convince the enemies to turn sides. You decide the number I need to beat with my 20 sided dice roll to succeed on this action. This number is called the DC of an action.

You are to give me options to react and do an action whenever any of the following happens:
1. I step inside a new room and look around my surroundings
2. Another character (friend or foe) is seen
3. Any event or action occurs to otherwise change the environment or dynamic of the situation, for example if a trap activates I have a split second to react and try to escape
Do note that any and all actions require a 20 sided die to be thrown to determine if it is successful.

At the end of every turn, decision or message you are to show me the amount of health I have remaining as well as my current inventory.


If you understand these instructions, reply with the following question: "Who is the big bad evil guy?"
The answer to this question will be the big bad evil guy for the adventure. You are to decide their hit points, armour class and damage yourself.

Then, ask "Who is the player?". The answer to this question will be the protagonist for this adventure and I will give you their hit points, armour class and damage.
